How perfect to pick the Advent word PLAY on the first day I had planned to paint with the whole rainbow of colors in my 4th grade art classes.
We painted cardboard in all the colors.
Though our goal was to end up with a variety of colorful background pieces, inspired by the method Eric Carle uses to create his art, some students created beautiful abstract masterpieces, such as one boy who named this piece, "Joy."
And this one that he named "Depression."
Next week each of the students will receive some of the cardboard they painted in all the rainbow colors and they will use it to cut out shapes to glue together their own robot sculpture. (Inspired by a book I love with images of Picasso's whimsical sculptures. I found it at a secondhand bookstore, where I said out loud, "I didn't know Picasso did sculptures!" I am so glad he did.)
This is my robot I made as a sample. What a perfect day for PLAYing.
I'm really excited that I am able to create art everyday, and plan to channel this new explored discipline into the upcoming year of the Secret Message Society. Do you want to create art as a living practice too? You can join me in 2016!
