Since acquiring my used copy of The Artist's Way, I've torn out the principles [like in Dead Poet's Society], pasted in my own creative affirmations, drawn in sacred symbols and altered the rules significantly so that they are no longer rules, but far more honoring to my own flow. Reading wise I'm on Chapter 2. But I am finding my own rhythm as far as the "TASKS" go.
As I began reading I sensed right away that I was going to need to physically alter some of the verbage. On my typewriter I typed up the lowercase and uppercase version of the phrase FOLLOWING THE WHITE RABBIT. Then I scanned it in and duplicated the type several times on one sheet of paper. I printed it out, and I keep it tucked in the back of the book. As I read I cut out this phrase, or a portion of this phrase, and glue it in where it is a better fit for me.
I've seen Teresa (of the Right Brain Planner) read a book interactively before and this is my first time really feeling ravenous to dig in and make the book my messy own. I want it to be a WORKbook with cracked spine, dog-eared pages, glyphs and alterations.
This is how I am returning to The Artist's Way exactly 10 years (that fact thrills me) after my first read through. 10 years is a lovely long time to let something simmer on the back burner of subconsciousness, and I've done a hell of a lot of work on liberating my creativity in the meantime. It helps to have some confidence and wisdom behind me now, to know how I can make it my own. I'm really enjoying this re-read. I love how I cycle back through and things take on fresh, much-needed insight.
