THE LUCKY 13!
What is something new you have learned about creativity by observing children?
Children don't need permission or seem to find inspiration everywhere. They allow their creativity to flow freely from within themselves.
*In Mad Hatter terms* In a time when you lost your "much-iness,” what did you do to get your much muchier back?
I slowed down. I said "no." I learned to be Self-ish.
How does a regular creative practice infuse other parts of your life?
Creative practice opens me to be available to experience more of life, allows me to be present.
Do you practice any moon rituals? If so, please share.
I sit out under her. As an herbalist I am aware of her phases as I make potions and medicine. I plant, harvest, and brew according to her cycles and rely on her to infuse my work.
What truth do you whisper to yourself just before you go to sleep?
"There is enough."
What do you consider to be home and how do you get there?
I'm still looking.
Is there a ritual you use to invoke your creative Muse?
Not really, although I always feel creatively inspired by the water, the sea or rivers or lakes.
Name an artist that is currently inspiring you and share why.
My fourteen year old son. He's just coming out the of the early teen stage we affectionately refer to in our house as the a$$hole stage and he's struggled with being able to constructively express his emotions. When he was younger he loved art and called himself an "artiste," but as he grew up decided he was to tough and cool for art. Just recently he's started painting again and it has been a balm to my mama heart to see him express himself. His color palettes are so vibrant and full of life.
Tell us about something beautiful you saw this week.
This week I was taken with all the things that are in bloom. I collected many herbal flowers for making medicines for my community. The borage flowers are a vibrant blue and I love the blue hues found in nature.
Write us the opening lines to your next week.
this day is open to so much possibility...
What color means something to you currently and why?
Purples and their connection to magic have been jumping out at me lately. I've also been processing some personal grief and blue is very comforting at the moment.
Do you collect anything?
I collect objects from nature for my altar, quotes for inspiration, and experiences and observations.
What’s the last great book you read?
I'm in the middle of The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe and I can't put it down. Its about graduate school and herbs and magic and the Witch Trials and witches--all the things I'm intrigued by at the moment.
Jessica is an herbalist living in New England with her partner and a house full of teenaged humans. Playing in the weeds, journaling, and making art help her pretend she is sane when she is in public. Otherwise she's perfectly content to run wild with madness.
