Yesterday afternoon I sat down in my favorite local coffee shop (the one I used to work at) and took a sip of my Americano before opening a piece of mail. I assumed it to be a correspondence letter for The Magic School, and was fully prepared to "go there" with my fellow Magic Apprentice.
What I found in the envelope instead was a copy of Beth Morey's brand new zine release. This shifted things for me. Instead of someone needing my response, I was on the receiving end, getting to partake.
Beth is a member of the Secret Message Society, and as it turns out, has wanted to create her own zine for years. This year in the Secret Message Society I decided to take members on a journey towards doing just that - making their own zine.
One of the reasons I decided to go this route is because it is one thing to read someone else's quotes and tidbits of life they've collected. Members have gotten to read my take on life for almost three years. It is rich for sure. But it is another thing entirely to start to collect the quotes and tidbits of YOUR OWN life, your very own secret messages that made their way UNIQUELY to you.
I have received four zines from Secret Message Society Members since we started this Let's Be Artists theme in January. Of course, no one has to send me their zines, but there is a certain joy in sharing them with someone who understands and values the medium. I have loved receiving them. As Beth is selling her zines, I didn't expect to receive one. It was very gracious of her to not only send me one, but to attribute a bit of her inspiration to me within the pages.
She starts her zine saying, "I don't know what I'm doing."
As I begin to read through it, I thought, "Oh but you do."
Later on in the zine she says, "Okay. So I know that I said I don't know what I'm doing. That's mostly true. But I do have a vision for She Zine..."
That vision rings clear throughout the pages.
I dove right into a blank space she provided for exploring my softness vs. hardness. Surprising myself with the diagram that she invited out of me.
And I quite enjoyed finding we had both drawn a potted tree.
Thank you Beth for taking a bit of my inspiration and running with it and completely making it your own creation. What you've done is inspiring and rich.
If you would like to join us in creating your own zine, you can join the Secret Message Society. I am currently working on the April issue which will be available April 15. The March issue will still be available until then.
