Well, we members of the Secret Message Society are off and running with our Let's Be Artists theme.
It is very encouraging to see other artists picking up their pencils and taking notice of their own living. There is something so comforting to me about peering into someone else's artistic rendering of their everyday. The drawings combined with the little tidbits we journal about our own intimate details, it means so much to me. The making of our daily living into pieces of art has a lifting affect. I do believe it helps us rise above normal. We get a taste of our own extraordinary. I particularly loved Heather's pride over her white space and this passionate display of her biological experiments. Can't you just breathe fresh air looking at all this life?
In the first issue of this year's zine, I encouraged artists to create a cover with a royal self-portrait. A very vulnerable expression of ourselves. This purple haired wonder makes me want to dive right into her unfolding story.
As I watch a few of these royal self-portraits pop-up on Instagram, (this one is so strong and determined) I am touched by how unique and charming individuality is. I love when a person is able to sink into the being of themselves. It is something we has humans often use energy fighting against. It takes a certain delicate mix of acceptance and determination to allow it. But to see someone in this artful manner, it opens something up inside me. It allows for future becoming - this imaginative picturing of ourselves.
I am grateful for artists who are making this artistic practice of creating a zine into their very own journey.
Though I suggested in this first issue to begin creating with pencil I found out, humorously so, there are those who can't stand the feel of pencil on paper, and so they adapted by reaching into their bag of tricks and pulling out other options: erasable pens, prisma colored pencils, aptly exploring what makes them feel good.
Artists are so good at taking (and making) their own route, and I look forward to continuing to be inspired by all the creative expressions that will come out of this willingness to put our creativity into practice. When I see YOU doing YOUR art in YOUR way, when I see YOU living YOUR life in YOUR intimate way, I am even more freed up to be me.
