I've been experimenting with sprouting things. The urge came upon me around March 17 and it escalated on the first day of Spring. It's no surprise then that the theme of sprouting seeds came out in my April Issue of the Secret Message Society zine.
I took Ruth Page's Gardening Journal back to the library today, and so I revisited this favorite quote. Seeing it again in this context of our Secret Message Society art collective, I felt myself wanting to adapt it a little to fit our needs as budding artists.
"Nature has designed us to want to grow. You and your art have the exact same goal."
When I came across this quote I felt a sense of relief. What I was telling myself all along is that there was no pressure with my seeds. They could grow or not grow. I would do my part and they would do theirs. And if we both did our best and they remained dormant, well then, natural consequences and keep moving forward. It is rather thrilling to have SEVERAL tiny pockets of soil experiments. If one's not doing something you can be sure another one certainly is.
So it is with our art and our living. Each page in my zine is like its own pot of soil, and me pressing pen to paper is like planting the seeds and watering them.
I gather the seeds from my life. They are the things I notice. The legos on the floor. The guitar strings asking to be tuned. The things I'm letting go of to tidy up my bedroom and simplify my life. The peppermints in a glass jar - the jar I can't remember where it came from.
I put them into my zine and then I wait to see what happens, remembering that my art has the same goal as I have...to grow, to grow, to grow. What is the string that ties my details together? What are the secret messages forming through the roots of my living?
So it becomes less concern over doing my art "right," and more about the natural consequences that come out of me and my art working together to see where it gets us. My zine is a curiosity compilation.
"Don't worry too much about it," Ruth Page says.
And I add, "Dear Artist, all movement is joining forces for your good."
Tell me about something that sprouted recently through your own art!
