ISSUE 42 is here!
Members can tiptoe into the Secret Lair for a digital download!
The centerfold is in full color and is a sheet of secret message guerilla art to cut out and share around your community. Members can also download the digital file to use these time and time again.
Each month these will be created by a guest artist. This month the centerfold was created by Cynthia. You can read her Lucky 13! interview HERE. (These same 13 questions will be answered on the 15th of each month in a blog post featuring that month's Secret Message Society Centerfold Artist.)
In Issue 42...
The artist begins with the cover. (Often the cover emerges later in the zine-making process.) Opening her laptop one day, the artist intends to take a self-portrait and instead decides to draw what she sees. Grabbing a red washable marker, a sheet of blank paper and pulling inspiration from artist Melanie Walker, she tries something new - blind contour drawing.
According to wikipedia blind contour drawing is a drawing exercise, where an artist draws the contour of a subject without looking at the paper.
When she returns to look at the paper, the artist falls in love with what she sees, especially the lips sliding off her own face. And just like that, this style of drawing becomes the common theme throughout the whole zine.
Packing a portable bag with 8 washable markers in the standard colours of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown and black, the artist sets out on an adventure to make marks in the the margins of her life, and is amazed how quickly the pages of her zine get filled up.
- Where do you make art? Do you have to be in a setting that is "just right" or can you challenge yourself to do it anywhere, in any situation? Even squeezed into mere minutes? What can you learn from this?
- What is your process? Does it have to be elaborate or can it be simple?
- What is key to YOU making art? Can the keys change? Who holds the keys?
Ready to join us on our #letsbeartists adventure? We have four months left to explore this theme! You can become a member HERE.
If you are already a member, pull out your markers, whether dried up or ink-filled, fold a few pieces of paper in half into a booklet and we're off! We have some (mark) making to do.
