The first week of October 2014, I was putting gas in my car to take off on a day trip which would entail the dreamy experience of seeing Katy Perry in concert for the first time. Already excited for this day, my senses were on high alert, looking to receive any sort of magic that crossed my path. I knew, for reasons I will not get into right now, that this was going to be a powerful day for me.

While at the gas station I found this SMART CARD in the credit card slot at the gas pump. Fun right? Especially for this girl who likes magic and wonder and #secretmessages. I excitedly put my thumb on the square and counted 1 Mississippi 2 Mississippi while my gas pumped. At the end of 15 seconds the square looked the same, at which point I flipped the card over to read:

Sorry . . . you're just like the rest of us. The dictionary says "good" is to be "morally excellent." Let's check the standard--the Ten Commandments, to see how far we fall short: Is God first in your life? Do you love Him with "heart, mind, soul and strength?" Have you made a god to suit yourself? Have you used God's name in vain? Have you kept the Sabbath holy? Have you always honored your parents? Have you hated anyone, and therefore committed murder in your heart? Have you looked with lust and therefore committed adultery in your heart? Have you lied (including "fibs"), stolen (the value is irrelevant), or coveted other people's possessions? If you are honest, you know you will be guilty on the Day of Judgment. God, however, doesn't want to send you to Hell. Jesus Christ suffered and died on the Cross in your place, so you could go free. That's how much God loves you. We broke God's Law, but Jesus paid our fine. Then He rose from the grave and defeated death. If you repent and trust in Him, God will forgive your sins and grant you everlasting life. Obey the gospel today. Read your Bible daily and obey what you read, God will never let you down.

I gotta be honest and say I ripped it in two. Then I said out loud, "That's a shitty thing to do to someone."

I felt embarrassed and set up. My innocent belief was made to look the fool.

This thrashing #secretmessage on this particular day was not lost on me. My eyes were wide open for what that day held. Given some time to think it over, I decided that I would take the message of the card and transcribe it into the #secretmessages I would have actually liked to come upon that day. I painted and inked them on cardboard from ripped up cereal boxes. Then I photographed them and digitally laid them out in a PDF so I could share them with you! This is the original set, and I enjoyed sharing them so much that I made more! (See the Guerilla Art section of my shop.)

There are two sheets to make a total of 16 #secretmessages. Upon purchase, you will receive an email with a link to download the PDF file.

Thank you for being willing to share these Messy Canvas #secretmessages with those around you! Print them as many times as you like. On cardstock works best. Leave them anonymously in the credit card slot of gas pumps, in library books, etc. Or give them to someone intentionally.  I ask that you give them away freely, but never use them for commercial purposes.

May the adventurous spirit of guerrilla art* surround you. May the magic find us all.
